The Most Common Myths About

Back Pain

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends and Social Media That Have Led To More Pain

Here are some of the most common joint and back pain myths that people who visit our clinic in Nassau have been told, which have actually hindered their progress and delayed their recovery from the condition or injury.

MYTH #1 - back pain is caused because of weight
The most prevalent myth I hear at Paramount Rehab & Fitness is that back pain exists solely because of a person’s weight. Many people hear this from their physician and other clinicians, and is a claim I hear frequently in the clinic. What I tell my patients is that, yes, losing some weight can be helpful and will improve your overall health, but that is not the sole reason why you have pain in your back. Back pain is a complex condition influenced by multiple factors, including posture, muscle imbalances, joint stiffness, lifestyle habits, and underlying structural issues. To combat these ingrained problems, I deploy various forms of therapy, including using manual therapy to strengthen your muscles and loosen up your joints to help you become stronger, more mobile, and more comfortable.
MYTH #2 - taking pain killers is an effective way to manage joint and back pain
Another common myth is that taking painkillers is an effective long-term strategy to relieve back and joint pain. This couldn’t be further from the truth. While painkillers may provide temporary relief, they do not address the underlying cause of the pain. Relying solely on medication will simply mask the symptoms without improving joint function or mobility. Instead, they act as a temporary band-aid, suppressing symptoms without improving the actual condition, which may lead to your injury or condition turning chronic. Instead, it’s important to keep active as this will improve blood flow to the affected joints, delivering essential nutrients to aid in healing and reduce inflammation. Gentle, low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or targeted physical therapy can strengthen the surrounding muscles, stabilize the joints, and restore mobility.
MYTH #3 - back and joint pain is just part of getting old
Another myth that needs to be dispelled is that back pain and joint pain are conditions associated with getting old and are something that you have to live with. While it’s true that the body undergoes natural changes as we age – such as reduced muscle mass, joint wear, and slower recovery – these changes do not mean pain is inevitable. Pain is often a sign of an issue that can be treated, managed, or even prevented with the right approach. If you want to improve your quality of life as you age, exercise and targeted maintenance are key. Staying active and engaging in the activities you enjoy can be achieved by taking care of your body under the guidance of an expert in the field. An expert can help determine what’s right for you so you can maintain a healthy, active lifestyle and avoid letting pain hold you back.
MYTH #4 - if you have back or joint pain, you should avoid exercise completely
Many people believe that exercising when experiencing back or joint pain will worsen their condition. This misconception often leads individuals to become overly cautious and avoid physical activity altogether. However, avoiding activating completely can actually make the problem worse. While short-term rest may provide relief for acute pain, prolonged inactivity leads to muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and reduced mobility. Therefore, I advise my patients to engage in low-impact exercises – such as walking, swimming, or guided physical therapy movements – to help strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and promote joint health. Movement also increases blood flow to injured tissues, reducing stiffness and discomfort in the process.
